چکیده

Polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) are terminally differentiated cells with a short life span, in the blood circulation. The prolongation of the life span of PMN is critical in their effectiveness against pathogens, in particular in the tissues. This review summarizes the effect of cytokines on PMN apoptosis and points to some examples of pathological situations characterized by inappropriate cytokine production associated with dysregulation of PMN apoptosis.

FIVE ALPHA DIHYDROTESTOSTERONE (5α-DHT) MAY MODULATE NITRIC OXIDE RELEASE VIA ENDOGENOU S CYTOKINES IN PERITONEAL MA CROPHA GES OF NZB/BALBc MICE

Recent studies have established that sex hormones directly or indirectly affect T and B cells and macrophages by manipulating the production of cytokines. In this study the possibility of the effect of 5a-DHT on macrophage (MΦ) nitric oxide (NO) release via interleukin-l, 6 (lL-1β, IL-6) or tumor necrosis factor-a (TNFα) was investigated. The endogenous cytokines IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α were ...

Effects of granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor and cyclic AMP interaction on human neutrophil apoptosis.

The current study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) and cyclic AMP (cAMP) signaling interaction on human neutrophil apoptosis, either occurring spontaneously or induced by Fas antigen activation. Results show that GM-CSF, dibutyryl cAMP (a cAMP analog) and forskolin (an adenylate cyclase activator) are all able to suppress sponta...

Neutrophil cell death in response to infection and its relation to coagulation

Neutrophil is a major player in the pathophysiology of severe sepsis. Recent studies have revealed that the cell death mechanism of neutrophils directly relates to the development of organ dysfunction during sepsis. Here we discuss about the different types of neutrophil cell death such as necrosis, apoptosis, autophagy, and the unique cell death style dubbed NETosis. NETosis cells release neut...

Apoptosis in human polymorphonuclear leukocytes: searching for a genetic roadmap.

Polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs or neutrophils) are essential components of the innate immune system in humans and function primarily to eliminate invading microorganisms. Neutrophil influx to sites of infection is desirable because it also initiates an inflammatory response. Paradoxically, PMNs are also intimately associated with inflammatory disease. As part of normal neutrophil turnover i...

Immunologic and functional evidence for anti-Siglec-9 autoantibodies in intravenous immunoglobulin preparations.

Human intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) preparations are increasingly used for the treatment of autoimmune diseases. Earlier work demonstrated the presence of autoantibodies against Fas in IVIg, suggesting that IVIg might be able to induce caspase-dependent cell death in Fas-sensitive cells. In this study, we demonstrate that sialic acid-binding Ig-like lectin 9 (Siglec) represents a surface mo...
